Dr. Ghaleb Mahmassani

Ghaleb S. Mahmassani is professor and attorney at law and legal counsel since 1962. He is general counsel for the Lebanese company for the reconstruction of Beirut central district (SOLIDERE). As international arbitrator he is member for Lebanon of the arbitrators panel at the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) of the World Bank; a member of the National Committee of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague, Netherlands; and, a member and former chairman of the Commission on Arbitration at the ICC- Lebanon. Between 2000 and 2005 he was Member of the Paris based International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). As chair of the arbitration tribunals since 1976 he has participated in several domestic and international arbitrations. He is also the current Vice-President and acting President of the Beirut Stock Exchange Commission.
Mahmassani has been member of the Commission on Electoral Law Reform, Member of the Commission of Modernization of Laws at the Lebanese Ministry of Justice, and member of the legal commission at the Bankers Association of Lebanon. As professor he has taught “arbitration law” and “Banking Organization Law” at the Lebanese University and the University Saint Joseph. He has written extensively about various topics in the field of law and banking organization. He holds a Ph.D. in law from the University of Lyon, a law degree in French and Lebanese Law from the University of St. Joseph in Beirut, and a Bachelor degree in political sciences from the American University of Beirut.
